Frequently asked questions.
If something here is not answered plainly enough, ask us — the answer usually belongs on this page.
Storage basics
What type of cars can I store?
Sports, prestige, luxury, classic, collector and exotic vehicles. In practice that means anything from a 911 or an AMG GT to a 1970s Australian classic, a collectible Japanese car, a European classic or a hypercar.
We do not list storage for caravans, boats, trailers, furniture, boxes or general goods, and hosts are not permitted to use a vehicle listing to store unrelated household contents.
Is Backyard Space parking?
No. There is no hourly, daily, commuter or airport parking on this platform. The minimum booking is three months and the typical arrangement is six to twelve.
What is the minimum storage period?
Three months platform-wide. Individual hosts may set a longer minimum — six or twelve months — and that is displayed on the listing and applied when you request. Billing is monthly regardless of the committed term.
What types of storage spaces are listed?
Private lock-up garages, large residential garages, secure private properties, gated compounds, commercial warehouses, small industrial units, prestige workshops with spare capacity, dealership space, professional vehicle-storage facilities and private collectors with room to spare.
Open street parking, public land, and space the host has no authority to offer are prohibited. See Prohibited Vehicles & Activities.
Can I store an unregistered vehicle?
Usually yes, if the host permits it — many classics and project cars are unregistered. It is shown on the listing and confirmed at request time. Unregistered vehicles may need transport rather than being driven in, and a host may require that.
Finding and requesting a space
Can I inspect a space first?
Yes, and we recommend it. Inspection is arranged directly with the host after your request is accepted and before the booking is confirmed. You are not committed to anything until you complete the agreement.
How is the location verified?
A host must provide evidence that they own the property or hold the right to offer it, and their identity is verified before a listing publishes. Photographs are checked for consistency with the described space. See BackyardSpace Verified.
When do I receive the exact address?
When the booking reaches confirmed status — after the host has accepted and you have completed the agreement and payment method. Before that you see the suburb and an approximate area only.
The exact address, access arrangements and host contact are released to you alone, every access is logged, and access is revoked if the booking is cancelled or thirty days after it completes.
Why can't I book instantly?
Because a host is agreeing to keep your car for months. Every host reviews the vehicle and the requested period before accepting. Requests expire after 72 hours without a response so you are not left waiting indefinitely.
What if there is nothing in my suburb?
Tell us what you are looking for. We collect the suburb, the vehicle, the term and the budget, and we use it to decide where to find supply next. You will be contacted when a verified space that suits your car exists nearby — and not before.
During storage
Can I access my vehicle during storage?
That depends on the space, and it is stated plainly on every listing: 24/7, business hours, appointment only, host-assisted, or owner-only. A private garage behind someone's house will not be 24/7. A staffed facility usually will not be either. Filter for the access you actually need.
Can I use a battery maintainer?
Only where the listing says power is available and the host permits a maintainer — both are shown as separate items because they are separate things. Many hosts offer battery care as a service and will fit and monitor one for you.
Can I extend my storage period?
Yes. Request an extension from your dashboard before the term ends. The host accepts or declines, and if accepted the booking and the monthly billing simply continue.
What happens if damage occurs?
Report it through the platform immediately so it is recorded against the booking with a timestamp. Responsibility depends on the circumstances, the arrangement between you and the host, and the insurance held by each party.
Requirements vary by provider, booking and insurer. Vehicle owners and hosts should confirm their own insurance arrangements. Backyard Space's final insurance and protection arrangements will be displayed before launch. Our dispute process is set out in Dispute Resolution.
Insurance and responsibility
Who is responsible for vehicle insurance?
Requirements vary by provider, booking and insurer. Vehicle owners and hosts should confirm their own insurance arrangements. Backyard Space's final insurance and protection arrangements will be displayed before launch.
In general terms, and subject to that review: a vehicle owner would be expected to maintain their own comprehensive motor insurance covering the vehicle while stored, and a host would be expected to maintain appropriate property and public liability insurance for their premises. Neither replaces the other.
Does Backyard Space insure my car?
No. Backyard Space does not currently provide any insurance product, and this site makes no such claim anywhere. If that changes, it will be because a real policy exists, and the terms will be published in full.
Is verification a guarantee?
No. Verification means we have reviewed specified information against defined criteria at a point in time. It is not a guarantee of safety, security or condition.
For hosts
Can professional storage businesses list?
Yes, and we want them to. Warehouse operators, specialist storage facilities, prestige workshops, dealerships, compounds and collector facilities can list multiple bays with capacity and availability management. See For Professional Hosts.
How do host payments work?
The vehicle owner pays Backyard Space monthly. We deduct the platform fee and pay the host on a scheduled cycle. The fee is shown to a host before they accept any request, and Founding Hosts carry a reduced introductory rate.
Live payments and automated payouts are Phase 2 and are not connected yet.
Does it cost anything to list?
No. Listing and verification are free. We are paid a service fee on successful bookings only, so we earn nothing unless your space is actually earning.
Can I decline a request?
Yes, for any lawful reason, and without explanation. You set your minimum term, your access rules and your house rules, and you see the vehicle before you decide.
Do I need council approval?
Possibly. Offering space commercially can engage planning, council, strata, lease and insurance requirements, and those vary by state, council and property. You are responsible for confirming your own position — every host confirms this in writing during onboarding. We cannot give you legal or planning advice.
